Day 30!!! I can not believe it’s already the last day of our 30 days of vendors! Today Andrea with August Veils is telling us more about her company! Enjoy!

Champagne: How did August Veils begin?

August Veils: I was part owner of AniA Bridal at its beginning.  When I was there, I enjoyed making the items rather than selling dresses.  When I became pregnant, under Doctor’s orders I had to slow down, so I sold my share to my partner.  After the pregnancy I decided to delve into making hair accessories and veils.  August Veils was born.

Champagne: Please tell us more about all of the great pieces that you carry—are they available to buy in the store or do you special order everything?

August Veils: We carry only our line of products that are lovingly made here in the studio using local talent.  At times we have the ability to sell off the rack if there is a quick turnaround however we prefer to make the bride a new one if time allows. Brides misunderstand the phrase custom made.  I have hundreds of pieces in my studio.  We can offer custom because everything is made in house.  It doesn’t make the price exorbitant.  Frequently, my brides are so surprised at the prices.  We are comparable to many bridal salons prices and often times we end up being a fraction cheaper. So how can you beat getting exactly what you wanted in less time and at or lower than the price found in bridal shops.  Of course we are not as low as online shops like etsy.  Why? To be blunt, we have overhead.  I have a stake here in the community.  I want to hire local talent so I know I can spread the love locally.

Champagne: We couldn’t help but notice that you also have options for the DIY bride, tell us more about that and how you came up with this idea! How much time will it take the average person to assemble the veil?

August Veils: DIY brides have always been around.  We would always give out advice and found that sometimes that wasn’t enough. Creating a veil kit and a video was the best way to provide DIYers a way to be creative without too much effort.  On average I would recommend that veils to be made 2 months prior to the event and give yourself at least a week to do it.  Because we create them in the studio, we can make quite a few in one day but then again we make them all the time.

Champagne:  At Champagne we’ve often used your Dress Preparation services—please tell our readers more about this as we feel like you’re one of the best options around for brides to get their dress pressed and perfected before their wedding day!

August Veils: This service was created out of necessity.  Many brides that have come through The Bridal Loft do not want the responsibility of trying to press their gowns let alone trying to bring it to the site where they are getting ready.  We make it easy for brides to bring their dresses to our location and we have proudly make every delivery on time without a wrinkle to boot.  Not only have the lovely ladies at Champagne NW recommended us but quite a few other event planners in the city as well as Edgefield has personally sent their clients our way.
Brides usually will bring us their gowns at the minimum one week before their wedding.  We carefully store the gown without the dress bag to allow it to relax.  It’s been squished in the gown bag for a while.  Then we press them to perfection.  Delivery is available throughout the PDX metro area for a modest fee.  Delivery to outlying areas is also available for a slightly larger fee.  When the bride comes to see me for this service, we talk about where the dress needs to be delivered as well as timing of delivery.  We usually deliver the dress to the location before the bride gets there.  SO when she arrives, it’s displayed in a safe location.

Champagne: Do you do the cleaning in house or do you have someone special that you take the dresses to?
August Veils: We can do spot cleaning for small stains but for larger stains or full gown cleaning we take it offsite to a trusted cleaner.  We’re picky about who touches our brides’ gowns.

Champagne: Alterations wise, how far in advance should a bride plan to schedule with you if she needs a moderate amount of changes made to her dress?

August Veils: Reserving a good alterationist is crucial.  If the bride has her gown in hand and does not plan on losing drastic weight, I recommend getting in asap. The heavy season for weddings happen July - September.  So the alteration department is working frantically starting in May. If the bride wants to lose weight, still call and make the appointment to get on the books.  Last year we turned away so many brides because they waited till the last minute.  The Bridal Loft is highly sought after for expertly altered gowns.  We are no nonsense and charge a fair price.  We receive calls everyday asking us for prices.  It’s hard to give a quote over the phone due to the intricacies of construction on gowns.  However, a bride is welcome to come in to get a quote and can decide from there.  On average, I would expect to pay $200.  When brides try to cut their expenses and just go on price for alterations, it usually backfires.  There have been many times we have had to fix someone else’s work.  Then they end up paying twice.  If a bride wants major work done on the gown, make the appointment now.  Multiple fittings are the case in this scenario. Oh my I can go on and on…

Champagne: What do you do, when you’re not doing what you do? We hear you love to hula!

August Veils: Haha LOL.  I do dance hula!  I am part of a wonderful halau (hula school) Ka Lei Hali’a O Ka Lokelani.  We do charity events and private parties to help raise money for our ‘O.H.A.N.A. Foundation scholarship fund.  We have only been in existence for over a year and we are proudly awarding 4 scholarships to the 2011 graduating class.  I love the hula. It is so expressive.  The songs speak of love for nature, family and love in general.  And as slow as the movements are, it is quite the workout.  People in the gym always stop and watch us.  They think it’s so easy.  They say oh it’s just hula.  Give me 10 minutes and I’ll break you into a sweat.  : )

I’m also a parent of a pre-teen boy Nicholas.  My pride and joy.  I help out at the school to fundraise money to be able to hire more teachers for the school and expand the school’s electives.

Champagne: Anything else you’d like our readers to know?

August Veils: I love to laugh. I’m a season ticket holder for the Portland Baroque Orchestra because I love that period of classical music. Good food makes me extremely happy.  I’m married to the most loving man.  He puts up with me to no end.  We’ll be married 19 years this March.  He’s also a great cook.  Which, of course, means I am no longer a size 8.  But my husband delightfully says to me, “all the more to love!”

Day 29 of 30: Cardgirl Custom Invitations

Day 29, meet Nessa with Cardgirl Custom Invitations!

Champagne: How did Cardgirl Custom Invitations begin?

Cardgirl Custom Invitations: It all began in early 2002, when I was planning my own wedding in Portland, Oregon.  I searched high and low for an invitation I loved, or a designer who could create an invitation to match my style and my wedding.  I wasn’t satisfied with anything I found, so I ended up designing my own invitations and stationery.  Seven years….and two children later I love my job more than ever.

Champagne: What’s your inspiration?

Cardgirl Custom Invitations: Each bride I work with has a vision of how her perfect day will look, and I love the excitement and challenge of coming up with the perfect invitation suite for the couple.  I enjoy every step of the process…idea generation, design, color, production…and most of all, the final product.

Champagne: Do you offer recycled paper invites?

Cardgirl Custom Invitations: Yes, and the letterpress ink is soy-based.

Champagne: What’s the approximate turn around time?

Cardgirl Custom Invitations: It depends on your needs, but the standard turnaround time is about eight weeks for design & production for letterpress, and 3-4 weeks for other printing types.  Please allow for additional time if heavy assembly is required.

Day 28 of 30: Reverend Lisa Kristen-Scott

0 Comments • Posted by Champagne on January 28, 2011

Just a few days ago it was the 2nd Anniversary of Champagne Wedding & Event Coordination! It was the day that we registered our business name and the day our lives changed forever! We are so thankful for all of our wonderful and supportive clients, friends and family!! Here’s to another amazing year!!

Day 28, meet wedding officiant, Reverend Lisa Kristen-Scott!!

Champagne: How did you decide you wanted to become an officiant?

Lisa Kristen-Scott: I felt very strongly from a very young age that I wanted to be a spiritual leader in some capacity.  Holding the space for wedding ceremonies and connecting to couples and their communities feels meaningful and fulfilling.

image

Champagne: Do you perform weddings that are non-denominational?

Lisa Kristen-Scott: Yes.  In fact, most of the ceremonies I perform are either non-denominational or non-religious, with an openness that allows for authentic spirituality, symbolism, stories or whatever matters most to the couple.  I especially enjoy ceremonies that bring families and communities together from different backgrounds, religious or otherwise, for a joyous occasion.

image

Champagne: How do you guide your couples through the ceremony planning?

Lisa Kristen-Scott: Couples generally meet with me first to see if we are a fit.  I provide them with a packet of sample ceremonies to choose from.  I welcome them to customize their ceremony however they wish, cutting and pasting from my templates, adding their own words, vows, wishes, etc., and creating their ceremony in the way that feels best to them.  I view my role as providing a basic yet flexible structure, offering transitions and guiding the overall flow.  I assure couples that whatever they decide for their final ceremony is exactly what will be said at their wedding, out of respect for them and their wishes.

Champagne: Why do you love performing weddings?

Lisa Kristen-Scott: Wedding ceremonies express not only what has brought a couple together but also what will carry them together onward.  This is a very sweet, yet profound gateway.  I love to witness how unique and varied couples approach this gateway, and then to hold a loving and respectful space for them, and for their families and friends as well.  It’s lovely to be a part of such a joyous beginning.

Champagne: How do you get to know your clients before the wedding?

Lisa Kristen-Scott:  At our meetings, I invite couples to share whatever they wish about themselves, their relationship, their dreams and intentions for their wedding and their lives.  There’s never any pressure or agenda on my part.  I’m also happy to answer any questions or share my perspective, if asked.  Couples are welcome to meet with me as many times as they want, to feel as connected and comfortable as possible before the wedding.  I don’t require a certain number of meetings.  It’s up to the couple.

Champagne: What do you do, when you’re not doing what you do?

Lisa Kristen-Scott: I am an artist and all-around creative-type.  I bake, garden, move, quilt, collage and put all kinds of things together.  I teach quilting as life skills to youth-at-risk and students with special needs, and teach quilt art residencies in Portland Public Schools.  I am also an independent consultant and facilitator for those who want to honor their creative lives and to share their visions, expressions and work with others.

Champagne: Anything else you’d like our readers to know?

Lisa Kristen-Scott : I have been performing wedding ceremonies for almost fifteen years now, and the ones that shine the brightest in my memory and touch my heart the most are the ceremonies that remain heart-centered and focused on the real meaning of the wedding:  the love and gratitude of the couple towards each other.

Day 27 of 30: Petalos Floral Design

3 Comments • Posted by Champagne on January 27, 2011

Day 27, Meet Stephanie with Petalos Floral Design!

Champagne: When and why did you decide you wanted to be a florist?

Petalos Floral Design: I’ve always LOVED playing with flowers.  My earliest memories are of watching my mom making arrangements for the house and her teaching me.  As I got older, I took every opportunity to take floral classes.  Fast forward to 2009.  I married my best friend; I gave birth to my son, Deacon; and I came upon a crossroad of whether to pursue a career change.  I really missed the creative, out-of-the-box thinking of my architecture experience along with the joy I felt while making floral arrangements.  Given my love for design, my passion for flowers and my ability to work with my hands, I started P E T A L O S [floral design] in January of 2010.

Champagne: What is the favorite part of your job?

Petalos Floral Design: I enjoy the challenge of designing something new and creative for each of my brides. Playing around with different color combinations … finding the right floral palette to achieve the perfect texture and look … I’m like a kid at the candy store—eyes wide open and ready to go for it!

Champagne: What should brides know when looking for a florist?

Petalos Floral Design: Don’t settle!  It’s important to find someone who sees and understands your vision.  Keep in mind, its great when you can provide us with photos and details to your wedding to see the overall look you’re trying to achieve. (i.e. your wedding gown, your venue space(s), your something old, new and blue items, etc.)

Champagne: What’s your favorite flower?

Petalos Floral Design: It’s a tie.  They’re almost complete opposites, but I would say peonies and orchids. Peonies are lush, fragrant and so feminine.  Orchids are colorful, sensual and have a distinct structure to them.

Champagne: How would you describe your style?

Petalos Floral Design: Currently, I would describe my style as contemporary with some vintage flare, versatile and filled with texture.  There are so many things that influence my design process, and my work definitely becomes a reflection of that.  For example, I’ve always been inspired by the glamour of old Hollywood and architecture so I try to interpret that into my designs whenever possible.

Champagne: What do you do, when you’re not doing what you do?

Petalos Floral Design: Play dates with my son.  Hosting dinner parties.  Cooking.  Wine tasting.  Going to the mountain. Concerts. Trying out new local restaurants with my husband.  Most of all, I love spending time with my family.

Champagne: Is there anything else you’d like brides to know?

Petalos Floral Design: Don’t overwhelm yourself with DYI projects.  DYI projects are a great way to add personal touches to your wedding, but too many will make you lose track of what your wedding is really about—a C E L E B R A T I O N.  So remember to have fun, relax, cry (yes, it’s okay to cry), dance, and if you like, have a drink before the ceremony!  Take it all in and embrace the day.
